The Horsehead Nebula is in the constellation Orion, and is part of a large, dark, molecular cloud. The red glow originates from hydrogen gas behind the nebula, ionized by a nearby star, while the darkness of the Horsehead is caused by thick dust. Bright spots in the Horsehead Nebula’s base are young stars just in the process of forming.
